I finished this in two sittings because the pacing of the summit pushes just pulls you along. What stuck with me was how honestly the exhaustion and risk come through alongside the record-breaking timeline.
The chapter on the fourteen 8000-meter peaks in under seven months had me putting the book down just to process it. I read the Death Zone sections twice, and the pacing made the whole thing feel like a thriller rather than a memoir.
I went in expecting a climbing memoir and got something closer to a thriller — the chapter on fixing ropes on K2 had me gripping the book. The way he breaks down the logistics of knocking off all fourteen 8000-meter peaks in under seven months made the impossible feel almost methodical.
