Bought two of these for my daughter's beach camp week and the cotton jersey is genuinely soft right out of the wash, no shrinking. She's picky about tags and scratchy seams, and she hasn't complained once.

My son has worn this shirt three days straight since it arrived, and it's still holding its shape after two washes. The fine jersey cotton is genuinely soft, no scratchy seams bothering him at the collar like his other tees.

The cotton jersey feels soft right out of the wash and my son hasn't complained about it itching once, which is rare for him. Only thing is it runs a bit snug, so I'd size up if your kid is between sizes.
