SKS stands for “Same Key System.” These types of cores enable you to lock all your Yakima products with just one key. When replacing a core on your Yakima product, you may need a Control key to remove your existing unlocked core so you can transfer the core to a different Yakima product.
Swapping this core in means one key now opens the rack, the bike mount, and the cargo box, which is a small thing that saves a lot of fumbling in the parking lot. The same-key setup is exactly what I was after.
Finally got all my rack accessories on the same key with this core, no more digging through a ring of mismatched keys at the trailhead. The Same Key System is the whole reason I bought it, and it works exactly as described.
Swapped this lock core into my roof rack and now it matches the key I already use for everything else, so no more digging around the glovebox for the right one. Took a couple minutes with the control key to pop the old core out.
